The Little Turkey That Could
by Don Holder

There was a little turkey
that ran a 5K race.
Not wanting to just finish
he dared to win first place.

His legs were short and his butt was big
but he had a lot of heart.
He gave no thought to losing
from the very start.

He ran and ran over hill and dale,
stumbling but did not fall.
He huffed and puffed, sweated and toiled
and gave the race his all.

When he crossed the finish line
his effort was no disgrace.
‘Cause when he turned and looked around
he had won first place.

He was a feathered wonder,
all marveled at his feat.
Then he heard the farmer mutter
running’s made him too tough to eat.

High goals and lots of effort
will always make you a winner.
But in our little turkey’s case,
It kept him from being dinner.
